To contradict the answerer below, it is actually originally a song, not a poem.

"Starlight, Star Bright" is an old English folk song which originated from the 19th century and taken to the United States by migrating colonists.

The song has superstitious connections, as it was sung by families as they shared wishes and dreams, or while wishing upon a shooting star.

The poem form of the song didn't really widespread-exist until the 20th century.

Some famous singers have actually taken parts of the song and added it to their own lyrics.

They are:

- Lucky Star by Madonna

- Cameo Lover by Kimbra

- Star Bright, Star Lite by Syl Johnson

- King Nothing by Metallica

It is also recited by Barbie (the doll) before she sings the song "A perfect Christmas".

And finally, it is also used in the Disney movie, Pinocchio.

Previous (incorrect) AnswerIt is not sung as it is not a song.

It is a poem and it is spoken.

Starlight, Starbright,

First star I see tonight,

I wish I may, I wish I might,

Have the wish I wish tonight.

So therefor No-one SINGS this poem!

What is a star and why can you only see them at night?

A star is a bright sphere of plasma being held together by gravity and nuclear fusion. You can see the star we orbit, our sun, during the day. Distant starlight, however, isn't bright enough to shine through the glare from the sun in the atmosphere. At night, when the earth's rotation faces you away from the sun and it's glare, you're able to see the light from far away stars.

Where do stars go at daylight?

Nowhere. You can't see the starlight past the bright sunlight, but the stars are still there.
