The linkage is slilm but it has been argued (coward) was a political-type record an analogy of the then current Iran Hostage Crisis, the Coward"s wife Becky being analogous to the Hostages held. By a similar token the equally offbeat- as far as I know it is the only popular song ( as opposed to some back-take cuts on seldom-aired Johnny Cash albums) that deals not with Prisoners as such , but the plight of an Ex-Con- Tie a Yellow Ribbon. The song specifically identifies the narrator as an ex-con who did three years in prison. The nature of the crime is not specified. The song is a sympathy bid for a cause most people find repellent . In popular usage this was extended to the successful conclusion of the Iran Hostage crisis- and the song was somewhat overplayed. the analogy is off-beam and off base. the narrator of (Yellow Ribbon) was an ex con, not a POW or hostage in a near-war situation. True Yellow ribbons were associated with the Cavalry, but that is something else. Who would advertise being related to a jailbird?
