∙ 14y agoThe boys run away from the body of the dead parachutist primarily because they did not realise that it was a body. In the predawn darkness when Samneric first saw the body, it moved as the wind tugged at its parachute and the twins thought they had seen a creature with wings. Given that this was what Ralph, Roger and Jack were expecting to see when they climbed the mountain, the illusion of movement convinced the three boys that they had also seen the beast.
