August 15th was the official premiere of the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. The premiere was held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. But that wasn't the first release of the final, edited film version. The first showing was on August 12th, at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Before that, there were sneak previews in select theaters of Southern California. But the previews weren't of the final, edited film.
