The first demonstration of television was in London in 1926 by John Logie Baird. In January 1929 the BBC began broadcasting television to the public using Baird's system. Although the transmissions were limited, they were regular broadcasts from that time onwards.

In the US, Philo Farnswroth's fully electronic system was first shown to the public in 1929 and RCA used that system when they began broadcasting in 1939. In that same year, the BBC ceased television broadcasts for the duration of the war and only resumed in 1945.
