Tolkiens book, The Hobbit, is thematic to the fantasy genre is many ways. From these roots Tolkien builds on a novel that contains the fantasy conventions of supernatural and mythical creatures, the imaginary setting and great battle, to convey his purpose in the Hobbit. This purpose, to take readers to an unseen, fantastical world filled with imagination.

The Hobbit was written by JRR Tolkien after a random sentence came to his mind during, of all things, a bike ride. The sentence was "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit", which ended up being the opening line of the book. Tolkien was already working on the world of Middle-earth in his book The Silmarillion, which was intended to be his only book on Middle-earth*. His curiosity was stoked at the idea of a creature called a hobbit, so he set off in his mind to discover what a hobbit was. He set the creature in the world of Middle-earth, telling the tale of Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves to his children and wrote, thus giving us The Hobbit.

*The Lord of the Rings was also a book he did not intend to write. But when he sent his book The Silmarillion in to his publishers, they asked him for another Hobbit story instead.

  1. He wrote the Silmarillion and many other related works of Elvish mythology and history mostly as personal entertainment, starting during WW1 while in the hospital recovering from combat wounds. He spent all the rest of his life returning to these stories and endlessly editing and rewriting them. While he lived none of these stories were ever finished, nor did he seriously ever consider finishing them.
  2. He wrote The Hobbit because he found a blank page in a pile of Student assignment papers that he was grading one day. He initially wrote the first sentence on that blank page and set it aside, continuing to grade the rest of the papers. Later he expanded and finished the story.
  3. He wrote The Lord of the Rings because his publisher kept asking for sequels to The Hobbit as readers were asking the publisher for them. However by the time he began serious work, WW2 had begun and he blended in many themes from his unfinished Elvish mythology and history in the Silmarillion resulting in a much darker story than The Hobbit and necessitating significant edits to the text of The Hobbit to harmonize the plots. The Lord of the Rings was originally written as a series of six sequels, but his publisher chose to publish the sequels two in each of three volumes instead of individually (I have heard that this was simply because of postwar paper rationing rules, but I'm not certain about that).

Predominantly to amuse his children, but the money was not without its attraction. His oldest son was 13 at the completion of the book.

Because he has all these wonderful ideas trapped in his head and never gets to use them. He wrote this book to show everyone that people do have wonderful ideas and an imagination.
