Answer The movie Glory highlighted the role of the black soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. This was the first time black men served in the US Army. Later, the black soldier was used in the US Cavalry out west in the Plains Indian Wars. This movie was significant in that it informed the public of the role of the black soldier of the Civil War.

Glory - Based on the letters of Colonel Robert G. Shaw. Shaw was an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War who volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudices of both the enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks), and of his own fellow officers.

As the US Civil War protracts and drains even the vast resources of the north, an experiment is made with black troops, serving in a special regiment under an all-white officer corps. Since the traditional military establishment considers this a bad joke, the young abolitionist idealist Robert Gould Shaw from a very privileged family gets the rank of Colonel with the dubious honor to command the black volunteers, mainly illiterate former slaves. Even his personal friend and second in command, Major Cabot Forbes, lacks confidence in the project; yet they must overcome countless difficulties in training, procurement etc. before the unit can even enter the War, but end up covering themselves and the Union army with glory -and a sea of blood- against the Confederates.

The fact that neither Colonel Shaw, nor the black soldiers that make up the unit receives any respect from white Officers and soldiers. In order to acquire the respect and glory they deserved, Shaw volunteers to lead his regiment in a valiant charge against a Confederate stronghold. Shaw is killed before he can enter the fort and many of his men die trying to take the fort. The film's epilogue tells how the fort is never captured. However, news of the courage shown by the black soldiers spread, which led to a huge recruitment of black soldiers. President Lincoln later remarked that their involvement helped secure victory. So, in the end, Shaw and the 54th found the glory they were seeking.

The movie Glory (1989) is base on the personal letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the writings of two books; Lay This Laurel authored by Lincoln Kirsteen, and One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard. In all likelihood, the movie's producers draw on a major theme of the story -- the fact that neither Colonel Shaw, nor the black soldiers that make up the unit receives any respect from white Officers and soldiers.

There is a book titled Undying Glory by Clinton Cox. However, the movie did not draw on that story.

The movie depicts how the black soldier went to war and found glory for their race.

As He died to make man Holy, Let us Die to Make Men Free! a line in the Battle Hymn of the Republic- Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! etc. This is the obious tie in in the Civil War drama. as secondary item might be the US Flag ( Old Glory) but this is doubtful.

When the Southern Congress passed an act to return blacks to captivity, and to execute all white officers, the men of the 54th were offered full discharges. Upon learning that not even one man wanted a discharge, Col. Robert Shaw exclaimed in a whisper "Glory Hallelujah!" This is also one of the most moving scenes in the movie.

When the civil war started the men who enlisted to fight thought it would be a glorious adventure. Years ago the company sent me the film and teaching materials about the film and this is one of the things they pointed out. If my memory serves me right in the first few scenes there is a line of a character that states they will find glory. After the first battle of Bull Run they realized just how bloody and awful war was going to be. Men threw down their guns and ran screaming from the battle field. There was no glory.
