What is the cause and effect in The Hunger Games?

The kids in The Hunger Games have to fight to the death of one another so they can win the games, and get home to their district. Once they win, you get fame, better food, and more opportunities.

The Hunger Games started after District 13 (leading the other districts) rebelled against the Capitol. The Capitol defeated 12 districts, and the 13 was destroyed. The Capitol created the Hunger Games to remind the districts that they have complete control over them, and that they can do whatever they want to the children of the districts.

originally, you would think the actual Hunger Games where the conflict, it being a fight to the death and all, but it turns out the conflict is that the 12 districts want another uprising and the Capitol already suspects it, so they need to find a way to put an end to the Hunger Games and the Capitol itself without them fighting back, or as little fighting as possible. Yet sadly there is no way around that. Also, Katniss is conflicted by her own feelings towards Peeta (<3) and Gale.
