"Oscar" is a stylized knight holding a crusader's sword in front of his body. His hands, chest high, hold the sword's "grip," with the blade running from his chest to his feet, pointing down toward the pedestal.

The name "Emmy" was chosen as a feminization of "immy", a nickname used for the image orthicon tubes that were common in early television cameras.[5] To complement the name, the statuette was designed to depict a winged woman holding an atom, which has since become the symbol of the TV Academy's goal of supporting and uplifting the art and science of television: The wings represent the muse of art; the atom the electron of science.[5]

∙ 10y agoIt is a sword. The figure also is standing on a reel of film. The model for the statuette reportedly was Emilio Fernández, the Mexican director and actor who played General Mapache in Sam Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch" (1969). Fernández was a friend of Mexican actress actress Dolores del Río. Her husband at the time was M-G-M art director Cedric Gibbons, who created the Oscar statuette.
