The beast is a symbol of the evil inside people, their capacity to do violent and unpleasent things simply because they that have the power to do so and also because they wish to do so. The beastie or snake-thing also symbolises irrational fear of the unknown.
It signify's the evil within us all.

The regular sticks in Lord of the Flies were spears. They were probably made by Jack who had a knife. The spears represented savage nature. The spears were used to hunt pigs but also to hurt and kill humans, like Ralph.

The two-pointed stick was meant for the pig head. One point would go into the head and the other point would be stuck in the ground. Before the hunt for Ralph started, Samneric warned Ralph that "Roger had sharpened a stick at both ends". This meant that the boys were going to capture Ralph, then kill him and behead him.

The hunting symbolizes that it is human nature to impose your will upon another creature and to prove your power over it. That there is a natural thrill and exhilaration of proving that you can outwit an animal and take it's life. This is why enemy soldiers are often called "beasts" or "savages" or "inhuman monsters". It is easier to kill or harm something that is on a lower evolutionary level rather than an equal.

Th beast can be referred to as the Devil in biblical terms, (similar to jesus's time in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights, referring to Simon as Jesus), but the beast is often interpreted as "every humans weakness", which is fear of the unknown and how peoples imagination can influence large numbers, those being right or wrong.

1. it originally held the head of the pig which was to be an offering

2. it represents a sort of sick and twisted justice. roger was going to stick ralphs head on a stick when they caught him in the last chapter.
