Lord Voldemort was a former student of Hogwarts School. His real name was Tom Marvolo Riddle. He took the name Voldemort because he did not want to carry his father's name, whom he was ashamed of. He was deep into the dark arts and planned on ruling the wizarding community. He believed in a pure-blood race, although he was not a pure-blood himself. He was the true heir of Salizar Slytherin. Voldemort formed the group who later called themselves the Death Eaters. Voldemort killed many people including Harry Potter's parents. When Voldemort tried to kill Harry as an infant, his spell backfired due to a protection Harry's mother placed on him. He was all but destroyed. Due to some very dark magic he had performed previous to his "death", he was able to come back and wreak havoc through Harry's years at Hogwarts. He escalated a reign of terror through the magical community. This came to a climax at a final battle at Hogwarts. Voldemort died during this battle.
