The dementors didnt actually side with Voldermort per say, in the books it states that they do not follow anybody but if voldermort gives them free reign then the demetors would be more inclined to do their bidding until anouther person offers them more.

Many people who have been in the Azkaban prison are said to have gone completely insane because of the Dementors.
