What characteristics does Ralph have in Lord of the Flies chapter 1?

The first words of the book are, and I quote... "The boy with fair hair." Along with his fair hair you also learn that Ralph has a tendency to stand on his head to express his happiness, perhaps due to an inability to express himself through words. There is also an impression of reserve about Ralph, Piggy is eager to be friends and offers information about himself but the fair boy prefers to remain aloof and to say little.

Ralph takes on the role of a leader, however he does not always know what to say when he is in charge. He simply restates the obvious and repeats whatever Piggy tells him. Ralph is handsome and is a leader because he looks like one and acts like one.

From the beginning it is apparent that Ralph has difficulty expressing himself verbally and tends to resort to physical activities such as standing on his head or exclamation such as Whizzoh and Wacco! Ralph seems happy to believe the best of things, he sees the island as a 'good island' he admires Jack's leadership qualities and views the lack of adults as a positive thing, allowing the boys the opportunity to 'have fun' until they are rescued. Ralph is also conciliatory, even though Piggy intrudes on his joy at finding himself on a tropical island he doesn't tell Piggy to go away but puts up with his uninvited company. Ralph also allows Jack the consolation of choosing what job his choir will undertake and then invites him to accompany him on his expedition to climb the mountain. Ralph also allows Simon to save face, after fainting, by inviting him on the expedition too. After Jack dismisses Piggy with a terse, "We don't want you." Ralph softens the blow by telling Piggy to collect names, "That's your job." Ralph is amiable, optimistic and has difficulty expressing himself but he is fair, conciliatory and thoughtful. Ralph also likes to get things done, as soon as the decision is made to climb the mountain he undertakes the task, immediately.
