Selena Gomez started acting in 2002 when she was in Barney & Friends. Years later, she attempted a Disney career. She auditioned for two lead roles in two attempted spinoffs, the first of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and the second of Lizzie McGuire. Both series were never picked up, but Disney liked Selena so much that they worked on a show for her to star in, as she was Disney's first Latina star. Selena Gomez then landed the lead role in Wizards of Waverly Place in 2007.

As Disney does with all of their stars, they make them pursue a music career. When she was first approached, Selena actually refused because she wanted a band. However, she did record the theme song for the show. She also recorded songs for DisneyMania 6, the film Tinker Bell, and her staring movie Another Cinderella Story.

It wasn't until 2009 that Selena Gomez & the Scene released their debut album. They released their sophmore album in 2010 and their third album in 2011. All these albums charted at #9, #4, and #3 respectively. As of 2012, the band went into a hiatus as Selena Gomez has been working on pursuing a solo career.

In 2013, Selena debuted her debut single as a solo artist, Come & Get It. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboards and performed much more successfully than any of her work with The Scene. She then released her second single a few months later, Slow Down, which has performed moderately, peaking at #70. She plans to release her debut album in July 2013, which will most likely perform better than her previous work as well.

Since Selena didn't officially release an album until 2009, her music career would be believed to have taken off when she was seventeen.
