Based on what she has said in interviews, school was not her passion-- music was, and that was her only after-school activity. She grew up in Barbados and came from a troubled home (her father struggled with drugs and alcohol, plus Rihanna had severe migraine headaches). While she was in high school, Rihanna turned to singing to help her feel better and forget her troubles. She formed a girl group with two classmates, and when they were 15 years old, they managed to get an audition with a well-respected music producer named Evan Rodgers. He was impressed with Rihanna's talent and her stage presence. When she was only 16 years old, she quit school and left Barbados to move in with Rogers and his wife in Connecticut. This enabled her to devote her time and energy to working on a demo recording, in the hopes of getting signed to a label.
