LP stands for a long-playing phonograph record. It was the primary recording medium for music beginning in 1948 and ending after the compact disc prevailed. Long playing records were made of vinyl and played at 331/3 rpm. They are still referred to as such. Long playing records are generally shorter than a CD but longer than an EP, or extended play. EPs are just longer than a single, often including about 4 or 5 songs.

In the US you can still buy brand new LP's.
