No, not at all. The Hobbit (even though it came out after Lord of The Rings) is a companion novel to the Lord of the Rings, they occur in the same universe, although The Hobbit predates the events of LOTR.

∙ 9y agoThe Hobbit provides a lot of good background about the world, and Bilbo, and Gandalf, and some about the overall situation in Middle Earth. However, you don't have to read it first to be able to follow the story in the six books of "The Lord of the Rings".
It might help understand it more. I read The Fellowship of the Ring before I even knew that there even was another book called The Hobbit. In The Return of the King, it might help understand about the eagles.
The Hobbit occurs about 50 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings.
Finally, if you wish to understand the full historical context and setting as well as the hierarchy of the supernatural and natural powers that influence events in Middle Earth, read "The Silmarillion". It is the most difficult to read and understand though, so definitely should not be read before the others.
