The above link is to an interview which was the closest I could find to an answer but it just tip toes around the issue. They never directly ask her if she's gay but rather how she feels about people thinking she's gay. she gives vague answers like "I'm, you know, a sexual woman" and "if it makes them happy to think I'm gay, let them think I'm gay."

I think she specifically avoids answering the question for one of 4 possible reasons:

1) She is straight and very actively for gay rights and as was the case with her straight character on The West Wing declines to answer because its not really anyone's business.

2) She is gay and worries it will be bad for her if it got out. (seems unlikely given her stance on gay rights and activism in the community.)

3) She is gay but worries being out will diminish her message on gay rights because gay people aren't the ones that we need to hear it from. Its not really news for a lesbian to be at a gay rights march.

4) She is gay and honestly just thinks its none of anyone's business, which its not.

I would be pretty happy if she was (a girl can dream, right?) which is what prompted my search in the first place but it seems clear that one way or another this is a question she would prefer not to be answered.
