There are many no specific common melodies that are used in rock music. However, there are common chords and riffs that are used in most modern rock songs.
Carter Burwell is primarily a composer of film scores, so his song titles are usually related to the film they are a part of. For example, he composed the songs 'Puppet Love' and 'To Be John M' for the film 'Being John Malkovich.' If you are interested in some of his other work, he was in a band called Thick Pigeons who had the albums 'Too Crazy Cowboys' and 'Miranda Dali.' He does some great scores though. If you ever find a copy of the 'Being John Malkovich' or 'The Man Who Wasn't There' score on CD, I recommend you pick them up.
