∙ 11y agoA full-sized symphony orchestra will have 16 1st violins, 14 2nd violins, 12 violas, 10 cellos, 8 basses, 2 each of Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, and bassoon, perhaps with a piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, and contrabassoon, plus 2 or 4 horns, 2-4 trumpets, 2-3 trombones, one tuba, one timpanist, as well as another 1-4 percussionists, and a conductor.
That's 60 strings, 8-12 woodwinds, 2-12 brass, and 1-5 percussion. With the conductor, that's 72-90 people. Exact numbers vary by piece, as not every piece uses every instrument. Some use less, and some use even more in addition to what's listed.
