Three- the first two were made for cinema in 1965 and starred Peter Cushing as The Doctor. They were 'Dr.Who and The Daleks' and 'Dalek Earth Invasion 2150 AD'. In these films, The Doctor was not a Time Lord from Gallifrey but an ordinary mortal scientist from Earth who had used some of Einstein's theories to build the TARDIS. A third film, called 'The Chase', was planned but never made due to poor box office ratings for the second of the films.

The third film was made for TV in 1996 and starred Paul McGann as The Doctor. In this film, he WAS a Time Lord and the TARDIS was an alien machine- it was set in Los Angeles on New Year's Eve 1999.
