Horcruxes are extremely difficult to destroy. They cannot be destroyed by conventional means such as smashing, breaking, or burning. In order to be destroyed, a Horcrux must suffer damage so severe that repair through magical means would be impossible. (Known specific means for accomplishing this are enumerated and detailed below.) Once a Horcrux is irreparably damaged, the fragment of soul within it is destroyed. A Horcrux can be magically undone only if the creator goes through a process of deep remorse for the murder committed to create the Horcrux. The pain of this remorse is so excruciating that the process itself may kill the creator.

The horcrux was voldemorts soul in Harry's body.

You have to realize that horcurxes are imaginary objects, so their creation and destruction is hardly an exact science... Jo decided that Harry survives and Voldemort's soul-part dies.

Some of the options mentioned are basilisk venom and fyendfire. The one in Harry Potter was destroyed with the Killing Curse. Some of the horcruxes were destroyed with the Sword of Griffindor, but that was because it was imbibed with basilisk venom. In the case of Nagini, a common sword might have worked; that is not entirely clear.

What happens when someone destroys a horcrux?

When someone destroys a horcrux they destroy the part of the soul hidden within it. It is extremely difficult to do so because only magic which is unreleasable will harm it and physical damage doesn't work. It needs to be a piece of magic which breaks the bond between the object and the soul. Nothing happens to the person destroying the horcrux unless they have been in some ways under its' power, then the spell will be broken. The wizard who created the horcrux may or may not realise that the horcrux has been destroyed. It could depend on how many hocruxes he or she has created because logically, if you have split the soul 7 ways then you are less likely to notice if one is destroyed than if you had split it 3 ways because they are smaller chunks. Like is you were to split a cake 20 ways, you are less likely to notice if one piece is missing rather than 2!
