I believe the berries symbolized rebellion. From my knowledge, (I am almost finished with The second book now) The whole second book is on Katniss and other districts rebellion towards the Capitol which started with the berries and her willing to not play by the Capitols rules.

The berries killed the smart foxface. Foxface stole the berries from Peeta and ate them, and was dead in ten seconds.
