Music first started when a person was board and wanted to be entertained . They probly just threw a rock and it hit a trash can and then they heard that it was good , I'm no expert about this but wouldn't you want to try to hit the trash can again if it made a really cool sound like......i don't know ....... MUSIC!

It is likely that the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians devised symbols to accompany the system of hand signs they used to indicate the pitch, tone, and shape of the melody. The Chinese had a quite sophisticated system of notation as early as the 3rd century BC. These early systems consisted of either symbols to represent separate vocal syllables - a form of solmization; or signs and instructions for playing specific instruments - a form of tablature.

Why did music notation begin in the Catholic Church rather than the traveling musicians?
Church music and notation began before the Church, it has its roots in the chant of the Jewish temple. Though there was a heavy Byzantine influence on the Western Church chant, some how their system of notation was lost before the 7th century and the monks had to reinvent a series of notation to accompany the chants that they had developed for the liturgy. I have no idea what traveling musicians may have had to do with any of this, I think they were a much later development in the Middle Ages.
