I think that the first live collaboration of a rock band and orchestra was the "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" by Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at 1969.

The Moody Blues recorded with an orchestra 2 years earlier in 1967.

Rock and Roll began as famous musicians (Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly) and then it grew into bands. The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones are the most famous early rock bands.
