No, not at all. The Hobbit (even though it came out after Lord of The Rings) is a companion novel to the Lord of the Rings, they occur in the same universe, although The Hobbit predates the events of LOTR.
The Hobbit provides a lot of good background about the world, and Bilbo, and Gandalf, and some about the overall situation in Middle Earth. However, you don't have to read it first to be able to follow the story in the six books of "The Lord of the Rings".
It might help understand it more. I read The Fellowship of the Ring before I even knew that there even was another book called The Hobbit. In The Return of the King, it might help understand about the eagles.
The Hobbit occurs about 50 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings.
Finally, if you wish to understand the full historical context and setting as well as the hierarchy of the supernatural and natural powers that influence events in Middle Earth, read "The Silmarillion". It is the most difficult to read and understand though, so definitely should not be read before the others.
The Hobbit should be read before.
The Silmarillion could be read before or after, it doesn't matter. I read it after.
Tolkien wrote The Hobbit before he wrote The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The events in The Hobbit predate the chronology of the Lord of the Rings by about 60 years.
The Hobbit is the prelude to The Lord of the Rings, of which The Fellowship of the Ring is the first part, so yes, it comes before.

Most likely... if there is, it would probably not involve any of the characters from the first four books. (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King...Sorry but I felt it called for a list to help people think about what the fourth one (in theory) would be called.)There is a high possibility that the movie "The Hobbit" will be made. The Hobbit is the book before the others.
