In the story line, he was a widower. His wife had died, possibly in childbirth. Opie was a cast member from the start. Like many cases like this in Tv, you never had any dialogue like ( Grace was a beautiful Gal, she looked like a Movie actress, no family pictures, etc. ( to some extent this caries over into service comedies) 5X7"s on the desk or bureau might bring thoughts of home and may pluck the heart strings too much for comedy. People do not live in a vacuum like electrons in tubes! We never learn the name of his deceased wife, who would be the fictional mother of Opie.
