No, it is a market economy. The former USSR is an example of a command economy (as well as Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam)

Actually, the U.S. is a mix between a market economy and a command economy. It is more of a market than a command but it is not completely either one.

No, command economy is when the government pretty much controls everything like what goods to produce, how and at what price. Apparently the US is a market economy, otherwise known as capitalist. Capitalism is pretty much the opposite of a command economy, it allows the individual to make decisions rather than the government.

More Information

The US economy is a mixture of types. Though at its founding, the nation boasted a free-market economy, changes in recent generations have shifted the economy sharply toward the command model.

The foundation of this movement is probably the abandonment of the gold standard and the creation of the Federal Reserve. These moves allowed the central (federal) government to seize control of the money supply, and more importantly to control its size, and therefore its value. Ensuing moves toward a command economy were made possible by this seizure.

The largest shift toward a command economy in recent years is undoubtedly the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare. Like it or hate it, the PPACA actually does place the fields of health care and health care insurance -- roughly 17% of the US economy -- to varying degrees directly in the hands of unelected government administrators. Also, the PPACA forces unwilling citizens, under threat of penalty, to purchase goods and services -- specifically health care insurance -- costing many thousands of dollars per year. It's a rather crude example of why it's called a "command" economy.
