A tiptronic transmission is essentially an automatic trans that will wait for your input on a selector before changing gears. Advantages could be no clutch so you will not need to replace one later; easier to drive in stop and go traffic easier to drive in general if you lack coordination; if you do not want to tell the transmission when to shift you can select a full automatic mode; gives you more control over the vehicle than a simple auto tranny; allows you to drive your car a little more aggressively Personal opinion about disadvantages LAck of "fun". Even though you tell the tranny when to shift you are not actually in complete control and driving a manual transmission is fun to a lot of people; it is much more costly to replace and/or fix if it breaks. More maintenance because it has auto internals and tranny fluid; usually not as good fuel mileage because it still uses a torque converter; more electronics to possibly have trouble with (electronics are very costly to repair) and the shifts tend to not be fast enough for "spirited" driving.
