The slave cylinder is a plunger that releases the pressure on the clutch. When you step on the clutch pedal, fluid is forced into the slave which pushes out a rod that pushes against the fork that then pusher against the pressure plate that is between the motor and the transmission.

Either it or the master is bad. Take the line loose on the slave, hold your thumb over the end and have someone push on the clutch. If the master is good, it will force fluid past your thumb. This means the slave is bad. If it doesn't, then it's the master cylinder that's bad. Slave may be also, but one thing at a time.
