What is the difference between a starter motor and starter solenoid?

On my 1995 Ford Explorer , as far as I know , the starter solenoid is mounted on the
starter and the
starter relay ( which most people just refer to as the solenoid ) is mounted near my
battery and has the positive battery cable connected to it ( a relay is a low voltage
switch ) P.S. I'm not a mechanic / technician

∙ 15y agothe starter motor is what physically turns the flywheel to crank the engine. the solenoid is an electrical switch, that when activated, sends the power to the starter motor.

I have known this cable to corrode through. If it has, the easiest remedy, is to replace the entire starter motor.
