first you remove the instrument cluster cover by taking out the headlight switch, rear defrost switch ect, take out all blank covers as well, use a Phillips screwdriver and remove all screws holding it on. take out the two screws holding the cluster to the dash. take out the five screws that hold the cover over the pedals in place. now reach up behind the cluster to the speedo cable, there will be a clip that as to be drepressed with your finger while you pull it back off the speedo guage. next you pop the hood and use a long Phillips head on a ratchet or a 13mm socket and remove the hold down bolt on the cable at the transmission. pull the gear head straight out and pull the other end through the firewall towards the front of the car. you will have to slacken the rubber boots at the firewall to do this. replacement is reverse.

Partial answer.

Remove dashboard fascia. Remove clock, lighter, and rear window defogg switch, let dangle on wires. Remove 6 screws retaining gauge cluster. Try to avoid dropping any screws into the shift lever opening. A light and magnetic pickup is required if you do. A screw left in there can cause ... big trouble.

Get a light and slide under the car, beneath the drivers door. Locate the speedo cable, running from the rear of the transmission tailshaft forward, to where it turns up to climb the firewall. At this point is a stud protruding from the bodywork, on this stud is a clip and pressnut, both of which secure the speed cable to the body at the foot of the firewall. Use a straight screwdriver to push the pressnut counterclockwise until it can be removed. Pry clip free, position cable over stud - not under - else stud will prevent the next step.

Return to drivers seat, pull gauge cluster out far enough to sneak your hand behind it to reach speedo cable. If need be, go to engine bay, locate speedo cable, push slack through firewall, return to drivers seat, pull again on guage cluster to enable reacharound. Grasp speedo cable retaining clip. The white thingy. Squeeze. Pull speedo cable from gauge cluster. Remove two electrical plugs on back of cluster. Try to avoid dropping gauge cluster, now that it is possible.

The rest should be straightforward, but haven't done it, so won't tell you how. You know as much about that as I do.

Best wishes.

You don't you replace it with a new one. You have to pull the instrument cluster off and disconnect the speedo cable from the back of the speedometer. what I usually do is either Duct Tape the two cables together (overlapping) or tie them together with parachute cord. Then slowly start pulling the old cable (make sure the cables stay together) and make sure the new cable feeds into the same hole in the firewall and channels and then plug the small gear into the transmission. Just remember to check the speedo cable at both ends, some cars are easier to start feeding at the speedometer end first others feed easier from the transmission end first.

The 95 Camry does not have a mechanical speedometer cable. There is a speed sensor located on the top of the transmission that is connected by wire to the speedometer.

What part needs to be replaced for a 1989 Nissan Sentra when the odometer and speedometer are not working?

Most of the time, the speedometer cable breaks, and you replace it. The best way to find out, is to unscrew it from the transmission, and see if you can pull the cable out from the casing. If it checks out to be good, then it will be the drive gear inside the transmission, or the speedometer itself.

Where is the vehicle speed sensor on a 1989 acura integra and how would you test it when the ECU delivers a code 17?

On my 1990 Integra RS the speed sensor is a part of the speedometer assembly. I got code 17 after repairing a dry/noisy speedometer cable. After putting the speedometer cable and instrument cluster back together, I test drove the car and found the speedometer wasn't turning because I didn't have the cable inserted all the way. After driving just around the block with the speedometer cable not connected, code 17 appeared.
