I think the piano was invented for entertainment purposes.

Keyboard instruments of the time had no way of controlling how loud or soft the tone was. The piano provided the solution to many problems suffered by musicians of the time.

The earliest known piano was built by Bartolomeo Cristofori, a harpsichord maker in Florence, Italy. Two of his pianos still exist. One dated 1720 is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the other, from 1726, is in a museum in Leipzig, Germany.

The first piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in about 1720. His aim was to make an instrument similar to the harpsichord, but where its volume could be changed, and that you could hold notes on, which was not possible with a harpsichord. He named it the pianoforte, which translates as softloud in italian, which was later abreviated as the piano.

The piano first known as the pianoforte evolved from the harpsichord around 1700 to 1720, by Italian inventor Bartolomeo Cristofor. Harpsichord manufacturers had been determined to produce an instrument with a better dynamic response than the harpsichord. Bartolomeo Cristofali, the keeper of instruments in the court of Prince Ferdinand de Medici of Florence, was the first to solve the problem.

I believe it was to create an instrument that plays both soft and loud. The original name for a piano is a "forte-piano" ("loud-soft"). This was the first instrument that could be played loud or soft by just how hard you pushed the key. Hope it helped.
