Florence is where the Renaissance started because of the Medici family, (who were the richest family in Florence) Under Cosimo de Medici, Florence prospered giving birth to literature, education, and more. Because of the prosperity, the Renaissance started. Florence was important because of it being a major trading city in Italy, and housing many important people such as Leonardo da vinci. It was very popular and very well known. It still is today too.

Florence was a major metropolitan city during the Renaissance - it's still one of the major art capitals of the world. Lots of people lived there, especially rich people - and rich people love to buy art! During the Renaissance, many artists moved to Florence to be near the money, and art had a huge boom as they churned out works as fast as they could make them.
