Houston was initially included as a candidate location because of the proximity to the 4,700-acre (19 km2) United States Army San Jacinto Ordnance Depot located on the Houston Ship Channel, and to regional universities.
Some say it was because Texan Lyndon Baines Johnson was Vice President at the time and oversaw the space program.
