Why is it difficult to land on the moon?
Conventional landings on the earth require an atmosphere. The moon has none so that landings become more complicated requiring rrockets. Another thing is that the gravity is weak. While this is an advantage in some ways, it can be hazardous in another. Lots of dust too that is real fine on the moon can foul up the landing rocket engines.

For each of these there was another astronaut orbiting the moon in the Command Module waiting for them. Prior to the moon landings two missions went to the moon to orbit it but with no intention of landing, as a test to see if they could reach it. You may be referring to the Apollo 13 crew, whose mission was abandoned after a problem on the command module. The three on that were James Lovell, Jack Swiggert and Fred Haise.
