In 1971, the wife of a downed & missing pilot in Vietnam, Mrs. Michael Huff, a member of the National League of Families, requested a flag maker to design a flag for the US Servicemen missing & prisoner of war in Southeast Asia. The purpose of the flag, was to remind people that their freedom to live and enjoy life, was being purchased by those who served, and the men that were prisoners of war & missing in action in Vietnam should never be forgotten. The designer of the flag utilized the techniques of the advertising business's of the day; using black and white colors for the project. Once the design was accepted, then the artist would add the colors. When the black & white proto-type was shown to the National League of Families, it was accepted AS IS. The original POW flag was simply black & white.
