Reference books are not to leave the library so they are available at any time - unless someone is reading it at the moment you might be looking for it. Having a reference book gone for a week doesn't help other people who might need it. Libraries don't usually carry multiple copies of reference books. You can always photocopy pages you might want to take out of the library.
