Inhaling hot carbon tetrachloride is very dangerous as it reacts with oxygen in the air to make phosgene1) - a poisonous gas that was used as a chemical weapon in the first world war.

According to COSHH (the UKs Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) there is no short term (up to 15 minutes) exposure rate that is safe for carbon tetrachloride. In fact over an 8 hour period you shouldn't be exposed to more than 2ppm. Exposure can affect the nervous system, the liver and kidneys and cause coma and death. It might take a while, but a good lungful is going to be harmful to your health.
In short, if you have to pick between hot or cold carbon tetrachloride - pick cold. If you have a choice as to inhale or not inhale - then don't!

Trichloroethylene was used as an industrial degreaser years ago, it was banned because it was highly carcinogenic. Now weaker derivatives are used, while they might still be referred to as trichloroethylene, it is not quite the same stuff, they have a similar make up and behave in the same way but do not cause cancer.

You can try looking for it using its newer name, tetrachloroethylene. Many different online chemical suppliers carry it under that name. Also, several automotive cleaning products use tetrachloroethylene as their primary ingredient, but there are probably other solvents mixed in, so they may not work for your purposes. I'll give a couple of examples. At an auto parts store (or the automotive section of Wal-Mart), look for spray cans of "Electrical Contact Cleaner", and read the fine print on a can to make sure it uses tetrachloroethylene. You can also look for spray cans of "Brake Parts Cleaner", but many of those just use a blend of petroleum-based solvents. If the can says "non-chlorinated", it's the wrong stuff. If it DOESN'T say "non-chlorinated", read the fine print and look for tetrachloroethylene.
