During the second World War, in 1942, Britain experimented with the Anthrax bacterium on the Scottish island of Gruinard. The experiments were undertaken because Britain feared that they would be attacked by Germany with similar biological and chemical weapons. Thankfully, Anthrax was never used as a weapon in World War II. The island remained "out of bounds" for several decades. In 1986 a company was employed by the British government to decontaminate the island. The island was finally declared "safe" on 24th April 1990.

You can become infected with anthrax by handling products from infected animals or by breathing in anthrax spores from infected animal products (like wool, for example). You can also become infected with gastrointestinal anthrax by eating undercooked meat from infected animals.Anthrax as a weapon. Anthrax also can be used as a weapon. This happened in the US in 2001. Anthrax was spread by sending letters with powder containing anthrax. This caused 22 cases of anthrax infection, including several deaths.

Is bacillus anthracis a good or bad bacteria and why?

Bacillus anthracis causes the disease anthrax. Anthrax is a life-threatening infectious disease that normally affects animals (such as goats, cattle, sheep, and horses). Anthrax can be transmitted to humans by contact with infected animals or their products. Anthrax does not spread from person to person. In the soil, where they live, anthrax organisms exist in a dormant form called spores. These spores are difficult to destroy. The spores have been known to survive for as long as 48 years. Ingestion of anthrax can cause serious, sometimes fatal disease. The most deadly form is inhalation anthrax. If the spores of anthrax are inhaled, they spread, and produce toxins that often cause death. The greatest threat of anthrax today is through a bio-terrorist attack which would be delivered as an aerosol. It is considered "bad".
