  • Its because of the iron in your hemoglobin, the chemical that makes red blood cells absorb oxygen and take it to your cells. Actually, if you bleed enough, blood smells like copper, too. There is also a protein in your blood plasma (The liquid that makes blood flow through your viens/arteries) that transports opper to your bone marrow, it is called ceurloplasm. The copper delivered here creates new red blood cells.

Here's a side-note on how much iron is in your body. It may not sound like much, but it is.... There's enough iron in your body to make a 3-inch nail, weighing approximately 3 to 4 grams.

For a while when I accidentally tasted my blood either because of brushing my teeth too vigorously, or sucking my finger after a small cut- I couldn't taste the typical metallic flavor. Turns out I was extremely anemic.

My doctor soon had me on some iron supplements, and now I'm able to taste it again. That might be what's going on.

What dose blood taste like?

It depends on the person (or animal). It can taste sort of metal-like from my experience. Blood cells contain iron in them to transport oxygen, this is the main reason most claim that blood tastes like metal (iron or copper).

What makes ice cream taste like metal?

The only meat I can think of that would taste like metal would be beef (or any kind of red meat, really). Red meat still contains blood when it's raw, and blood contains iron. If the meat is not well-done, the metal taste is likely from the iron in the blood.
