Many people have good balance throughout life. But some older people start to lose their sense of balance because of physical problems that develop.

Adult onset Diabetes can lead to hardening of the arteries and block the little capillaries in the feet until nerves in the feet die from lack of nutrition. And when you can't feel your feet against the ground it gets harder to balance.

Another cause of poor balance is spinal cord injury. In old age the disks cushioning the vertebrae in the spinal column gradually dry out and can start bulging. Bulging disks in the neck or lower back can push against the spinal cord tightly enough to pinch and damage it. And spinal cord damage can affect the whole nervous system below the area of injury, interfering with the signals helping people stand and walk.

Hearing problems can cause loss of balance, too. So can Arthritis, and some medications and combinations of medications.

Older people may lose balance due to age-related changes in the inner ear which affects equilibrium, decreased muscle strength and flexibility, slower reflexes, and other factors such as vision problems or medications that cause dizziness. It's important for older adults to stay active and engage in exercises that can improve balance to help prevent falls.
