Slaves faced brutal consequences if caught trying to escape, including physical punishment, torture, or death. Many lacked the resources, knowledge, or support to successfully flee, with few places to go where they could find safety or a means to survive on their own. Additionally, slaves often had family members left behind on the plantations, making escape even more risky and difficult.
