The National Security Council recommended a three-stage escalation of the bombing of North Vietnam. On March 2, 1965, following an attack on a U.S. Marine barracks at Pleiku, Operation Flaming Dart and Operation Rolling Thunder commenced. The bombing campaign, which would ultimately last three years, was intended to force North Vietnam to cease its support for the NLF by threatening to destroy North Vietnam's air defenses and industrial infrastructure. As well, it was aimed at bolstering the morale of the South Vietnamese.[47]

There are two dates for the American involved Vietnam War: 1955-1964 is the guerrilla war SOUTH Vietnam. 1965-1975 is the conventional war in both NORTH & SOUTH Vietnam. Note: North Vietnam was not bombed prior to 1965. NVA and USA regulars did not officially tangle prior to 1965.

The US used every aircraft (to include U-2's & SR-71's) in it's inventory to bomb North Vietnam into submission. To destroy Hanoi's means of conducting the war in South Vietnam and to bring North Vietnam to peaceful negotiations (peace talks).
