The Puritans left England after Henry VIII established The Anglican Church. They had hoped reform would take place in the new Church, but their hopes failed. They decided to migrate to the New World, so they could practice their religion their own way. They believed they would be " A City on A Hill" and reflect an image of a morally upright society back to England.

The Puritans were a group of people who fled to American to avoid persecution from religious leaders in England. They thought the Church of England was turning away from the true meaning of Christianity by becoming too politically involved. Knowing they could not do anything about it, they moved to America to freely worship in their "purified" form of Chrisitianity and away from the corrupted influence.

The Puritans thought the church had become too corrupt and had moved away from its traditional roots. They were not allowed to practice religion the way they wanted to in England, so they left England for the Netherlands, and later for America in search of that religious freedom.
