Why did the Irish hate Oliver cromwell?

Sadly it appears simply because they were Catholics & he was not. While I may admire Cromwells military skill & leadership qualities this is one General I strike from my list of the greats.

Actually he also did it because he was worried that another country was going to join with the Irish and take over England.

This is absolutely not the case whatsoever.

England had been in a civil war Ireland had supported Charles I against parliament and Cromwell. Cromwell landed in Ireland to destroy the royalist forces and the infamous masscre at Drogheda, for example, consisted almost entirely of English troops and not Irish civilians as is often touted. Indeed, most of the civilian casualties happenned AFTER Cromwell had left Ireland.

Cromwell himself said that while he had no truck with Catholicism he didn't begrudge the man who believed it as long as he didn't take up arms.

His activities in Ireland, against Irish Catholics, were murderous - to say the least. Some historians term him genocidal or near-genocidal.

In any military siege from the middle ages to the 19th century it was normal practice to allow the besieged town to surrender and, if they did not after the first assaults, it was usual for the soldiers entering the town to do with the inhabitants and their belongings as they wished. The British/Portugese army at Badajos in the Peninsular War did the same to the people of their allies because the citadel in the town, held by the French, would not surrender.

It is always difficult for a commander to control all his troops when their blood is up, soldiers were known to kill their own officers who tried to stop many of these actions.
