Equality. It is the same reason that Christianity appealed to women. The poor, slaves, and the women of that time were all treated badly. The message that Christ came and died for all of them made them feel special. The christians also treated them better.

A:Luke's Gospel was very much addressed to the poor, and would have been well received by the poor of Rome. By the third century, around fifteen hundred widows, infirm and other poor were maintained by the oblations of the faithful, a still small number in a city of more than one million people, but no doubt an impressive act of charity by the Christian Church.

The success in Rome of the Christian Church really began with Emperor Constantine in the fourth century. Constantine ceded to the Church the responsibility for distributing state aid to the poor, allowing the Church both to be seen as generous and to proselytise to the poor. He also promised every Roman convert a white garment, with twenty pieces of gold.

Because it got them in the same boat as the Emperor. Also, because the Emperor funded the church, the poor got expensive food and the rich could socialize without spending large amounts of money on parties.

Why do you have less evidence about the poor Romans than the rich Romans?

Since whatever the poor used must have been something that could not endure staying the same shape for years and years to come. And because when whoever took over the Romans they kept the good stuff ( Rich romans houses and mansions...) and destroyed the things they didn't need ( poor people things) Addition Look for books by Mary Beard on the excavations at Pompeii. For example the contents of the sewers can be examined to find what the rich and poor ate. She says the poor were surprisingly well fed.
