First time round, to assert credibility as a new nation and gain recognition from Britain, to encourage them to send military aid. Second time round, it was simply to wage aggressive war on the North instead of just defending the South, and bring hostilities to an end.
Victory in this battle gave Lee and Jackson the confidence to try to invade the North.
