Hundreds of years ago, rabbits were called "coneys" (pronounced with a soft o, as in "honey"), and baby coneys were called "rabbits." Over time, the word coney was phased out, and the word rabbit came to be used for the adults; baby rabbits are now called "kittens" (or "kits").

The current nickname for rabbits, "bunnies," derives from their original name. Some languages still use the original name (e.g. the Spanish word for "rabbit" is "conejo"; the Dutch, "konijn").

Some species have the word "rabbit" in their name, like the jack rabbit, when they're not actually rabbits: e.g. jack rabbits are hares. Hares and rabbits are closely related, though (both lagomorphs).

It's a common misconception that "bunny" means a baby rabbit. Baby rabbits are called "kits." The word "bunny" is just a nickname for "rabbits."

More Answers:

Rabbits has a scientific name "Lagomorph" which means long ears, big feet, and continually growing teeth. So a man named a rabbit a rabbit for all its appearances.

A rabbit is called a rabbit because it is the adult form of a bunny.

That's incorrect - a common misconception!

OK so a rabbit is sometimes referred to a bunny because it is small and a baby so a bunny is a small rabbit or a baby and a rabbit is an older bunny.

If you are picking up a bunny or rabbit you must hold their but and grab their feet. Rabbits and bunnies are very a afraid of being dropped and getting hurt.

Be sure to pat your bunny or rabbit a lot they loved to be patted. By patting them they know you smell and trust you to take care of them.

The words "bunny" and "bunny rabbit" are nicknames for rabbits. Rabbits used to be called "coneys" (pronounced the way "honey" is pronounced -- it rhymes with "bunny," not "Tony") and the word "rabbit" used to mean baby coneys in specific; over time, the words changed so that "coney" was dropped and "rabbit" came to mean all ages of the animal, but the nickname for "coney" -- "bunny" -- stuck around and is still used as a nickname for rabbits today.
