They are called pioneer plants because they are often the first species to inhabit a barren area. Mosses grow well in these barren areas because of the lack of competition for light, nutrients and space with other taller species. With time, as taller species establish in that area, mosses will lose out and die off. Hope that answers your question! ~Rashid
